Dear Mrs. Cross,

The members of the Chief Petty Officer Association (CPOA), Washington, DC Chapter wish to thank you and the Coast Guard Admirals’ Wives for your generous donation to mitigate the needs of Coast Guard enlisted members who are experiencing financial hardship. Such hardship can be felt most painfully during the Holiday season.
In December 2004, your generosity assisted some very needy Coast Guard members and also sent the message that you care. With assistance in 2004 from the Master Chief Petty Officer of the Coast Guard’s office, we called upon Chiefs throughout our Coast Guard to identify candidates. The response came from many Coast Guard districts and named numerous Coasties.

We carefully selected enlisted members suffering genuine hardships to benefit from your generosity. Coasties in mostly junior paygrades were identified based on severity of hardship. Most had experienced tragedies such as cancer and automobile accident involving themselves, their children, or their spouse. In one case a member was struggling with a very sick child suffering from Cystic Fibrosis. Other beneficiaries were single parents, including one who was trying to get her Christmas gifts out of layaway. You also brightened Christmas for a Chief’s 12 adopted children, most with disabilities. We Chiefs were saddened by the degree of hard times impacting some of our members.

We distributed your total $1725.00 (in amounts ranging from $75.00 to $225.00) to 19 needy Coasties. We were very satisfied with the selections. We encouraged the candidates not selected to apply for other available assistance.

Please know that you and the Coast Guard Admirals’ Wives made a significant contribution toward brightening the season for our Coast Guard enlisted members and their families who work so diligently all year long to keep our Coast Guard and nation strong. You embody our Coast Guard tradition that we “take care of our own.”

Thank you.

Sincerely,

Mark Allen

Dear CWO3 Maher,

The members of the Chief Petty Officer Association (CPOA), Washington, DC Chapter wish to thank you and the members of the Chief Warrant Officers Association for the support you have given our USCG Flags Across America program over the last two years.
In late 2002, CWOA funded a 10-foot glossy banner for our Veterans Day event at Arlington National Cemetery. Since then, the banner has been used at a variety of events, including fundraisers, booths and parades. One of the program’s proudest moments this year was marching in the Coast Guard Festival parade in Grand Haven, Mich. for the first time. The banner was “up front and center” and carried by two Coast Guard SPARs who served in World War II -- they were thrilled to be able to carry the banner! We plan to march in this year’s Festival parade as well on Aug. 7, 2004 and the banner will once again be front and center!
We also thank the CWOA for helping co-sponsor and fund this year’s Veterans Day event at Arlington National Cemetery. Due to CWOA’s generous support, we were able to provide coffee and rolls at our pre-event registration – very much appreciated by those who attended on a chilly November day.
Please know that you and the Chief Warrant Officers Association made a significant contribution toward the building of our program to the point where it is now receiving national recognition. I look forward to working with you and seeing you at many more Coast Guard and USCG Flags Across America events during 2004 (see schedule enclosed). Happy Holidays and have a prosperous 2004.

Sincerely,

CWO2 Edward J. Kruska,

VADM Thad Allen

Chief of Staff

United States Coast Guard

Dear VADM Allen:

Thank you very much for your generous donation towards the Chief Petty Officers Association 2003 Christmas party for kids in the local community.  Your gift helped to pay for the presents that Santa gave to the kids at the party.

The Washington DC Chapter of the CPOA has been holding this annual event for at least 10 years, if corporate memory serves.  We work with the staff of the Southwest Community House (SWCH) at Second and Q Street, which is Southwest D.C.'s primary social service organization.  The staff selects the children to attend the party and provides transportation to the CGHQ building.  Most of the children are students at Anthony Bowen Elementary School, CGHQ's P.I.E. school.  The SWCH has been the DC CPOA's official adopted charity for many years.  In addition to the Christmas party, we provide SWCH with turkeys for Thanksgiving baskets for families in the local area.  We also occasionally run a food drive to help restock their emergency food pantry and provide supplies for the Senior Citizens picnic.  In past years we have held a summertime picnic for the kids and even done a little patching and painting at the community house.

I am glad you could stop in to see the Christmas party -- it was a great one this year!  Thank you again for your contribution.

Sincerely,

Mark Allen

Dear Mrs. Barrett,

Such hardship can be felt most painfully during the Holiday season.

With assistance in 2002 from the Master Chief Petty Officer of the Coast Guard’s office, we called upon Chiefs throughout our Coast Guard to identify candidates. The response came from many Coast Guard districts and named 40 Coasties.

We carefully selected enlisted members suffering genuine hardships to benefit from your generosity. Coasties in mostly junior paygrades were identified based on severity of hardship. Most had experienced tragedies such as cancer and automobile accident involving themselves, their children, or their spouse. In one case a young member unexpectedly became a single parent of three young children just before Christmas. We Chiefs were saddened by the degree of hard times impacting some of our members.

We distributed $95.00 each to nine needy Coasties. We also included a 15-minute phone card with each distribution.

Dear Omar Chavez,

The members of the Chief Petty Officers Association (CPOA), Washington, DC Chapter, wish to thank you and your staff for your continued support of our CPOA chapter. You have allowed space within your facility for the Headquarters’ Chief Petty Officers Mess. The ability to have a dedicated location for a chief’s mess is particularly meaningful because the chief’s mess is traditionally an area where chiefs and invited guests can gather for friendship, to discuss important issues and to mentor one another.

You and your staff have provided support for numerous CPOA functions such as our most recent officer installation breakfast and our Christmas poinsettia sale. The CPOA supports many charitable organizations and profits from many of our functions go directly to those persons in need. The CPOA is able to increase our monetary donations to these charitable organizations because you generously provide Marketplace Café space free of charge. All of our special events that have been held in the Marketplace Café area have been great successes. The chief’s of the Washington DC chapter realize that our success is not possible without the support of our outstanding friends such as yourself and your staff.

Thank you again and please pass our sincere thanks to your staff.

Dear CWOA, Washington, DC Chapter:

We members of the Chief Petty Officer Association (CPOA), Washington, DC Chapter wish to thank you for your generous contribution of $75.00 to the annual CPOA Christmas party for the children of the Southwest Community House in December 2000.

Please know that your unsolicited assistance allowed these children from our local community to enjoy a holiday celebration as otherwise not possible.  You helped to provide food and drink, as well as music and games.  Before the evening ended, Santa presented a personally labeled Christmas gift to each good girl and boy – as there were no naughty children that day.
