CPO Paschal,
Thanks for the minutes. Having been a member of the chapter
since 1972 and
a charter member
of the National since its inception, I find the growth of
the chapter to be
very encouraging and wish to compliment the members for
the hard work they
contribute. In the 70's the chapter was in danger of
falling apart and
has struggled for a long time but the result is obvious.
I regret that I no
longer live in the DC area so I could participate but if
I ever get the
chance to visit HQ I will certainly do so. Please pass on to
the members that
they are always welcome to visit me in Peru, as are all
Coasties. This
year I was pleased to host the Chief's Mess of the CGC Polar
Star and arrange
for golf and a tour of Cusco and Machu Pichu for many of
the crew. I have
now mounted on a wall of my office in the Military
Assistance
Advisory Group the beautiful picture they sent me alongside of
the painting of
Munro fighting the Japanese on Guadalcanal. Thanks again
for the minutes.
I like reading them even if I can't participate.

Chief Paschal: thank you so much for building such a
comprehensive e-mail bang list for our DC CPOA Meeting Minutes and other
announcements. It's an effective way to keep our distant e-mail using
members in the fold. We have you to thank for such happy notes as this.
Master Chief Miller: your note is by far the happiest of my
whole day! I am so pleased to hear from you in such a faraway place and
from the early days of our proud DC CPOA. I was able to get in touch with
QMCM R. M. Shannon during my CCTI and before he died. Until now, he was
my only contact from that early DC CPOA era. Pls visit our DC CPOA
Website (URL below) and comment based on your experience. You might
consider establishing a Flags Across America chapter in Peru! Pls also do
visit us anytime you are in the DC area. We will roll out the red
carpet. A visit to Peru sounds great too. . . . :-)

Senior Chief Allen,
Your web site is terrific. I have been following the DC Chapter for
almost 30 years and I can tell you that it is in the best condition I have
seen it in during that time. Keep up the good work. It always amazes me
what a few dedicated individuals can do to turn a good chapter into an
outstanding chapter.
I
was president of the Long Beach Chapter back in '69 when MCPO Kane and
Shannon organized the first meeting of the National CPOA. We all got
permissive orders to come to DC from all over the country to write the
first set of by-laws and tried to organize the CPOA into a national
group. We stayed at the Navy Yard in a building that had a dormatory set
up in the attic and a bunch of double bunks. It was hotter than hell with
all the windows open so since most of us couldn't sleep, we would gather
around a couple of bunks and work out the language for the by-laws. I'm a
little surprised that the group of CPO's who gathered there were never
recognized by National as the founders. We elected Kane as the President
and Shannon as VP. Capt. Caliando was sent by the Comdt. to help us (or
spy on us) and at the end of the week, the Comdt. had a lunch for us. I
was just a boot chief at the time and a little overwhelmed by it all. I
still have the Charter Member Certificate that was given to each CPO that
attended.
Not much history on the DC Chapter but a little on the organization of the
National. Stay well.

Thank you from all of us here at DC CPOA including our volunteer

take seriously. Thanks also for the fascinating CPOA history. Pls keep
it coming if any other thoughts come to mind.

Mark,
I
couldn't find the picture with ADM. Smith but here is a picture of six of
the Chief's who attended that first meeting. I am in the rear right (the
handsome one) with my hand on the shoulder of the Chief in front of me.
Master Chief Arnsbarger (sp?? Arnspargar) is in the front left of the
photo. I have copied a couple of friends who didn't know me when I had
hair or knew me when I was a boot instead of a boot Chief.

The
certificate is also attached and signed by Master Chief Kane. If my
memory serves me correctly, he told me that the only Chief's who would be
given this certificate are those that were members of the National on the
date of the first meeting. I'm sorry I can't remember the names of the
other Chief's in the picture but I think the short one in the front middle
was from Seattle and the guy in front of me was from Alaska but that is
really stretching my recollection. When I find the picture of ADM. Smith,
I will send it to you.

Please acknowledge receipt and that you were able to open the attachments.
Bill

Miller:
thanks a bunch! Yes, images opened fine. It's exciting to rcv them.
Incidentally, INF2 Ed Kruska and I visited the grave of ADM Willard J.
Smith on 26 OCT 02 as we prepare for the 09 NOV 02 FAA event at Arlington
National Cemetery. I have also attached FYI the DC CPOA Charter, also
signed by Master Chief Kane. Isn't this fun?

Webmaster Don:
pls post to the DC CPOA History page.
Thanks to all!
